Sustainability – Jolica style

(Quito, Ecuador) Included in this year’s Jolica Collection is product made from tagua nut which comes from Ecuador. Tagua nut is a sustainable, natural resource derived from the seed of a palm nut from the Amazon. It is often referred to “vegetable ivory” because it can be carved in interesting shapes like elephant ivory. However utilizing this resource does no damage to the elephant population nor to the rainforest.

While Ecuadorian artisans historically have harvested this resource to send overseas for making buttons, they now work with it locally, creating jobs and generating income. The artisans have honed their skills and shape and dye the tagua nut to create beautiful pieces of jewelry. Jolica’s 2007-2008 Collection includes two pairs of earrings, a necklace and a bracelet in an assortment of colors.
